World Best players nomination.
Wales forward Gareth Bale is the only player
from the home nations on the 23-man shortlist
for the Fifa 2014 men's world footballer of the
year award.
Bale, 25, scored 22 goals for Real Madrid last
season, as the La Liga side won the Champions
League.
Five Premier League players in Thibaut Courtois,
Diego Costa, Angel Di Maria, Eden Hazard and
Yaya Toure have also been nominated for the
Ballon d'Or.
Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo will be looking to retain the award.
Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, who has won the award three times in the last four years, is also on the shortlist, alongside team-mate Neymar.
The 23 shortlist will be reduced to three in
December before the winners are announced on
12 January, 2015 in Zurich.
However, there is no place for Barcelona striker Luis Suarez, who played a crucial role in helping
Uruguay qualify for the last 16 in Brazil but was
suspended from all football-related activity for
four months for biting Italy defender Giorgio
Chiellini.
Suarez's suspension meant that under Fifa rules,
the 27-year-old, who was the Premier League's
top scorer with 31 goals in 33 matches for
Liverpool last year, was not eligible for the
shortlist.
In terms of Premier League clubs, Chelsea have
the most players on the list with three - Courtois,
Costa and Hazard, with Manchester United (Di Maria) and Manchester City (Toure) each supplying one.
Real Madrid and Bayern Munich players dominate the list, with each club supplying six players.
World Cup winners Germany have the most
players nominated with six, with Spain and
Argentina three apiece and France and Belgium
two each.
Wales, Portugal, Sweden, Brazil, Netherlands,
Colombia and Ivory Coast each have one of their
players in contention.
Carlo Ancelotti, who guided Real Madrid to the
Champions League, Super Cup and Copa del Rey
last season, has been nominated for the coach of the year award.
Chelsea's Jose Mourinho, Manchester City's
Manuel Pellegrini and Manchester United boss
Louis van Gaal, who guided Netherlands to the
third place in the World Cup, are also on the 10-
man list for the coach award, alongside World
Cup winning coach Joachim Low

MALE TENNIS, St. Rogers marches on in Hamburg
Fed marches on in Hamburg
Roger Federer will face Florian Mayer in
the quarter-
finals of the German Tennis Championships after a
6-4 6-3 win over Jan Hajek. Federer, the top seed at the Hamburg event, took
little over an hour to beat the Czech qualifier despite
squandering 10 of his 13 break points, including five
match points in the eighth game of the second set. The 17-time grand slam champion one is playing
with a new, larger racquet in a bid to end a slump
which saw him eliminated second round of
Wimbledon./ "I guess it's to a degree some more getting used to,
just to see how it reacts on every single shot," he told
the ATP's official website. "Clearly it reacts better to some shots. But it's
important not to think of it the whole time, not to talk
about it all the time, but more just sort of go with it,
fight for every point, have the right mindset, be
optimistic about playing here now and wanting to
achieve a good result and that's what I'm doing." Home hope Mayer defeated 11th seed Feliciano
Lopez 7-6 (7-1) 6-2 to line up a meeting with
Federer. Second seed Tommy Haas also progressed on home
soil as he defeated Carlos Berlocq 6-2 6-4 to set up a
quarter-final with Fabio Fognini, who moved into the
last eight with a 6-2 6-4 win over Marcel Granollers. Wimbledon semi-finalist and fourth seed Jerzy
Janowicz had a bad day as he was forced to retire
from his match against Fernando Verdasco due to a
right arm injury when the Spaniard was leading 7-5
4-0. Verdasco will face qualifier Federico Delbonis in the
last eight after the Argentinian defeated Dmitry
Tursunov 6-4 6-3. Elsewhere, third seed Nicolas Almagro eased into the
quarter-finals with a 6-2 6-3 win over Guillermo
Garcia-Lopez. He will play fifth seed Juan Monaco,
who needed three sets to beat Benoit Paire 6-3 2-6
6-2.

BOXING, Chisora: My Mother knows best
Dereck Chisora has revealed how harsh words
from
his mother convinced him to clean up his act. The controversial heavyweight
will attempt to get his
career back on track when he faces American Malik
Scott at Wembley Arena on Saturday night. Chisora's reputation has been blighted by wild antics
such as the slap he aimed at Vitali Klitschko at a
weigh-in and his press conference brawl with David
Haye. But the Londoner decided to change his ways after a
stern lecture from mother Viola and an emotional
conversation with promoter Frank Warren. Chisora has undergone anger management sessions
and displayed an improved physique as he tipped
the scales at 17st 4lbs for the Scott fight. "One day my mother had had enough and she said
'why can't you just listen to me for once in your
life?'," he said. "She told me what to do and I thought I'll do it for six
months and if it doesn't work out I'll do it my own
way. So it was my mother who made me change, she
said I needed to start listening to people. "Then Frank got me in his office and had a go at me
in front of my mum and trainer. Frank said 'I don't
understand' and I saw tears in his ears. "Me and Frank have come a long way and I thought,
'you know what, I'll listen'." Chisora cannot afford another setback after suffering
four defeats in his last six fights, including a
stoppage loss to Haye last July. The 29-year-old failed to impress when he returned
with a win over little known Hector Alfredo Avila in
April, prompting Warren to read him the riot act. "He looked like a load of blubber. He'd been going
down the gym and coming home and having a pie.
You and I can do that, but not him," Warren said. "I just sat down him and told him straight - you can't
live like that and have the career you should have. He
has a lot of talent but was letting himself down. "I got in Viola's ear about it and she got on to him as
well. We both let him know that he could be doing
things better and it looks like he got the message. He
looks fantastic right now."
